Today’s breakfast ingredients were the same as the previous two days. Before Wen Mingtang prepared to make the egg-filled pancakes, she briefly processed the carrots and diced meat.
The side dishes made with these two ingredients were not bad, but since Ji Caimai brought the ingredients, Wen Mingtang helped herself and picked out the lettuce, potatoes, and pork tenderloin. When her eyes fell on the remaining slaughtered ducks, Wen Mingtang paused and immediately looked away.
It was important to make breakfast first!
She washed the lettuce, cut the potatoes into shreds, scooped them out in hot water, and made cold shredded potatoes. As for the pork tenderloin, she cut it into thin slices, wrapped it in egg white, salt, and pepper, marinated it, and fried it in a pan.
After all the side dishes were prepared, Wen Mingtang started making breakfast.
Take out the divided dough and roll it slightly with a rolling pin, roll it into a rectangular shape, brush it with oil, and fry it in a flat iron pan. Ji Caimai was originally curious about how to fill it, but when he saw the surface of the pancake suddenly swelled up like air, he couldn’t help but be surprised: “I thought it was an ordinary dough, but it was actually empty inside?”
Wen Mingtang smiled and nodded, cracked an egg, added some salt, and stirred it slightly. Then, she cautiously used chopsticks to puncture the puffy pancake. Once a hole was made, she poured the egg mixture into it.
So, the egg really went in! Ji Caimai smelled the aroma of eggs and flour that gradually became enticing after frying. He swallowed subconsciously. When the Jidan Guan Bing was turned over and cooked, she started to add vegetables.
Brushing on a layer with doubanjiang and soybean paste, the sauces that Ji Cai ordered, Wen Mingtang added lettuce, shredded potatoes, and pork in succession. Then, she wrapped the entire pancake, folded the outer layer with oiled paper, and handed it to Ji Cai.
The Jidan Guan Bing was still a bit hot, and even with the oil paper, one could feel the slight burning sensation on their fingertips.
But smelling the aroma of Jidan Guan Bing in the paper bag, Ji Caimai couldn’t bear to let go. He opened his mouth and took a bite of the full-flavored Jidan Guan Bing in front of him.
His first reaction after that was: that the filling of eggs in this Jidan Guan Bing was definitely not a gimmick, it was really delicious when done like this!
The fried pancake skin was crispy on both sides. Although it was delicious when eaten alone, after adding a layer of egg in the middle, there was an extra layer of smooth and soft egg texture in the crispiness. Compared with eating it alone, the texture was better as it suddenly became richer.
If you eat fried food too much, it will always feel greasy. Lettuce was the most important layer to reduce the greasy feeling. With the lettuce, you won’t be bored. The potato shreds that followed were sour and spicy, which whet your appetite. After your appetite is maxed out, the marinated and fried tenderloin slides into your mouth extremely tender.
Ji Cai enjoyed the food immensely and couldn’t stop praising it!
Today’s morning meal was still popular, and before the morning meal time had passed, the Jidan Guan Bings per person had been sold out.
“It’s all Zhao You’s fault! He came here on Lin Shaoqing’s behalf and got three portions by himself!” Liu Yuan, who came a little late today, grabbed the last portion of the Jidan Guan Bing and ate it while praising it and complaining.
But he heard Wen Mingtang, who was starting to clean up the countertop, asking Ji Caimai: “Ji Caimai, can I use this duck?”
Ji Caimai picked his teeth, holding a cup of wolfberry tea in his hand, and nodded: “It’s just for you,” he said after a pause, as a foodie, he was keenly aware of Wen Mingtang’s original intention of asking this question, “Master Wen wants to make duck dishes?”
Wen Mingtang said: “The dumpling wrappers are useless today. I wanted to use them, so I asked about this duck.”
What kind of duck dish requires the use of dumpling wrappers?” Ji Caimai was intrigued again and asked Wen Mingtang: “What kind of duck dish do you want to make?”
Wen Mingtang said: “It’s called roast duck!”
Ji Caimai said “Oh” and immediately waved his hand: “Take it away, take it away!”
While Liu Yuan was busy devouring the Jidan Guan Bing, he heard this and hurriedly asked, “When will Master Wen’s roast duck be ready? Can you save some for us?” He said with a distressed look, “There’s another case, and I probably won’t be able to eat properly these days. Wang Master’s evening meal is sure to go hungry…”
Before he could finish his words, Ji Caimai interrupted him unceremoniously. He pointed to the rules set by the Internal Affairs Office to meddle in other people’s business and said: “The public kitchen does not provide midnight snacks.”
Liu Yuan’s face collapsed upon hearing this, but before he could speak, Ji Caimai suddenly coughed and said, “Of course, if Master Wen borrows the public kitchen’s place, it doesn’t matter if he cooks it for herself!”
Liu Yuan’s face suddenly lit up with joy, and he quickly looked at Wen Mingtang: “Master Wen, look at this…”
Wen Mingtang smiled and said, “You can just come to the public kitchen in the evening.”
As he said this, she took Ah Bing and Tangyuan and walked away holding the ducks’ necks.
Seeing the three of them walking out of the public kitchen with a long-necked duck in each hand, Liu Yuan couldn’t help but say: “The way you walk with a duck in one hand looks quite bold!”
Ji Cai gave him a sidelong glance and said, “If you don’t finish eating soon, you won’t be able to arrive at the main hall on time today. Be careful; the junior officials will mark you as late!”
Liu Yuan was startled by this sentence and hurriedly ran out of the kitchen and towards the office lobby.
After slowly finishing the Jidan Guan Bing, Lin Fei took a few sips of tea, got up, and went to find his coroner.
The body was brought back yesterday, and Zuo Zuo took over the autopsy.
When he passed by, Wu Zuo was holding Jidan Guan Bing to eat the morning meal. When he saw him coming, he called out “Lin Shaoqing”, then pointed to the body that had been spliced together on the table and said: “I don’t need to say more about the cause of this man’s death. Seeing how pitiful he was, I sewed him up.” After saying that, he couldn’t help but muttered again, “It’s so pitiful!”
Lin Fei said “Hmm” and walked over.
To facilitate the autopsy, the makeup on this man’s face had been washed away, revealing his original face.
Judging from the appearance, he looked like he was in his twenties. The eyes that were open yesterday had been closed. After the corpse was put together by the coroner, it no longer looked as scary as yesterday but lay there quietly as if asleep.
Lin Fei picked up the autopsy document written by Wu Zuo and looked at it for a moment, pointed to one of the lines, and asked Wu Zuo, who was eating Jidan Guan Bing: “Is there any injury on his hand?”
Wu Zuo nodded and said, “There are a lot of scratches on his right hand.”
“New injury or old injury?” Lin Fei asked.
“It should be a scratch one or two days before death,” Wu Zuo said. “After all, he is a novice opera singer and has to practice swordsmanship. Maybe it is the scratch left at that time.”
Lin Fei didn’t speak, but walked to the right side of the body, lifting the hand and examining it in the sunlight.
Under the sunlight, the scratches on the fingers were crisscrossed. Because they were almost healed, it was hard to tell whether it was the lines between the fingers or the scars.
The sun fell on Lin Fei’s face. He looked at the hand as if he was stunned and motionless.
Wu Zuo glanced at Lin Fei, and when he was about to continue eating the Jidan Guan Bing in his hand, he heard Lin Fei suddenly say: “He has something to say.”
